The dogs that end up in shelters, rescue places, pounds have all been tramtized in one way or another, they all have adopted attitudes, some sweet & loving to the ones who want to tear you a part. If you do not understand the body behavior of dogs it is best you learn a few things about behavior before you actually do. Are you strong enough to handle in a firm but gentle manner? Can you handle a attacking or biting dog? How would you handle a fear biter? How would you know the difference between the reasons dogs bite?
Can you tend the wounds on the dogs?
Usually a biginner at a rescue kennel would be picking up dog poop. From all the cages & kennels. It is not a pleasent job but it is one that has to be done. Lord, knows I’ve picked up my share & more. You can never be above that cause that is what any responsible pet owner would do. Constantly cleaning up after them.
Working with dogs is very rewarding & your heart is in the right place but you are a big young unless you have the experience.
By all means volunteer where you can, they need the help, but it may not be doing what you thought your would be doing. As you gain experience in handling dogs, they all need a good bath, exercise & hands on. Not everybody is ment to work with animals but if you have a gift & you start working with it now you will gain much knowledge.
Always watch what is going on & how dogs are handled. An experienced dog/animal handler knows just what to do & how to handle it. Watch & learn.
You will enjoy it if you got what it takes. Keep working with dogs. You will be rewarded many times over.
